There is a big heterogeneity immune cells. When studying these cells in bulk, this heterogeneity gets obscured, while also limiting the possible signal amplitude and frequencies. However, understanding this heterogeneity within cells is crucial to understand the way they function.
Microfluidics have proven to be a great way to perform single cell analysis. I plan to use a valve based microfluidic chip to be able to precisely send signals of various frequency, duration and amplitude to single cells. By monitoring these cells over time I will be able to study the heterogeneity within the population of cells.
