The challenge

This project was from my final year of my Bachelors in Architecture degree in New Zealand in 2018. We were given a brief with specific requirements and requests from the `client` as well as council/building limitations for a pre-selected site. We were then tasked with designing the entire building in the space of half a semester as well as ensuring that it is structurally feasible (with the use of constructing with timber and/or steel). A main requirement for the school was for it to be unique to New Zealand and represent our values and culture.

The solution

My concept explores the songs of native birds and the idea of the school being a nest where students are essentially raised up to eventually become musicians and performers. Numerous methods of integrating the identity of New Zealand have been incorporated into the design. While doing so, I have paid attention to the structural elements and material specifically, using them in a way which enhances the buildings nature and atmospheric qualities. The structure has been run through a number of simulations and calculations which prove that it is capable of resisting both earthquake and wind loads. Although there is still room for improvement and a lot more in-depth development yet to take place, I believe the concept is iconic and highly representative of our identity. The project involves a number of digital and analogue methods of creation: Digital: Rhinoceros v5, Grasshopper, Revit, Adobe Suite, Resist Analogue: Laser Cutting, 3D printing, Sketch, Maquettes
